Accessible Pilgrimage: Journey to Dambadiwa for All at Sammuka Chaithya in India

#Traveling is not just about reaching a destination—it’s about experiencing new cultures, finding inner peace, and embracing spiritual growth. For persons with #disabilities, ensuring #accessible #travel is essential to making these experiences inclusive and meaningful.

#Manique Gunaratne together with the team from #Damrivi Foundation visited the #Sammuka #Chaithya in November 2024.

Among the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites in Dambadiwa (India) is Sammuka Chaithya in Varanasi, a place of deep historical and spiritual significance. This revered site marks the moment when #Lord #Buddha, after attaining enlightenment in Bodhgaya, first met the five ascetics (Paswaga Mahanun) who had once been his companions in extreme ascetic practices. Initially skeptical of his enlightenment, they were soon moved by his radiant presence and profound wisdom.

This meeting led to Buddha’s first sermon Dhammachakkappavattana Sutta, where he set in motion the Wheel of Dhamma, revealing the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. Sammuka Chaithya stands as a powerful symbol of transformation, wisdom, and the beginning of the Lord Buddha’s teachings that continue to guide millions today.

Ensuring that spiritual and historical sites like this are accessible for all, including persons with disabilities, is a step toward a more inclusive world where everyone has the opportunity to experience the profound spiritual journey of Dambadiwa.

Let’s advocate for accessible pilgrimages so that no one is left behind in their pursuit of spiritual enlightenment!
