Embracing Freedom Through Travel from Varanasi to Bodhgaya in India

#Travelling opens hearts, minds, and possibilities — and everyone deserves to experience it. For #persons with #disabilities, travelling is not just about moving from one place to another — it is about freedom, dignity, discovery, and belonging.

#Manique Gunaratne together with a team from #Damrivi Foundation embarked on a sacred pilgrimage to #Dambadiwa, India in November 2024, tracing the footsteps of the #Lord #Buddha.

On the scenic road from #Varanasi to #Bodhgaya, the journey was enriched by the beauty of nature — the peaceful flow of the #Gangi river, lush paddy fields and tranquil rural landscapes.

Fully of joy, the bus echoed with laughter and singing, as the group shared stories, spiritual reflection and deep bonds of friendship.

Travelling creates lasting memories and promotes #inclusion when everyone is part of the journey.

Farmland landscape with rice fields. In the foreground, there is a patch of green grass and a narrow road. Behind the road, there are rectangular plots of rice fields—some areas have tall, green rice plants, while others have yellowish, harvested rice stalks lying flat on the ground. A few small bushes and patches of dry soil are visible near the road. In the background, there are a couple of large trees, a blue multi-story building on the right, and a metal electricity pylon on the left. The sky is clear, and the scene stretches out to a flat, distant horizon with more fields and trees.

A bridge railing with alternating black and yellow stripes in the foreground. Beyond the railing, there is a wide river stretching into the distance, with hazy skies above. On both sides of the river, there are banks with some greenery and scattered buildings. The far side of the riverbank has a visible road or path running along it, and the overall atmosphere appears calm and slightly foggy.

Farmland scene with a paved road in the foreground. Beyond the road, there are two main fields: one on the left that has already been harvested, showing cut stubble and a small haystack, and one on the right that is still full of green and yellow crops, likely rice or wheat. The fields are separated by narrow earthen ridges. In the background, there are more green fields, trees, and a cluster of buildings and houses, with a tall chimney visible to the far left. The sky is clear and blue, and the overall setting appears to be rural.

Concrete bridge over a river with a rural landscape in the background. The bridge has vertical cables and an arch structure. On the bridge, a man is riding a motorcycle, and another person is riding a bicycle. Below the bridge, the river water appears somewhat murky, with some floating debris and trash near the bank. On the far side of the river, there are green fields, bushes, and a flock of sheep grazing. The sky is clear and blue, and there are a few scattered houses and trees in the distance. The foreground shows the edge of the bridge with yellow and black painted stripes.
