Empowering Journeys: Saree Shopping & Leisure in Varanasi, India

#Leisure and #recreation are not luxuries—they're essential for the well-being and #dignity of persons with #disabilities. Embracing this spirit, disability #rights #advocate #Manique Gunaratne, together with the dedicated team from #Damrivi Foundation, enjoyed a vibrant and #inclusive shopping experience in the historic city of #Varanasi, #India in November 2024.

From rich silks to colorful cottons, the joy of saree shopping reflected the importance of #accessible leisure time that fosters independence, confidence, and social inclusion. Let’s continue to build a world where everyone can fully participate in every aspect of life—including the simple joys of shopping and relaxation.

Traditional handloom weaving setup in a workshop. The image shows a large wooden loom with many vertical threads (warp threads) hanging down, some of which are tangled or grouped together. There are several colorful spools of thread lined up at the front of the loom, resting on a white cloth. The loom is set up in a room with plain, slightly worn walls and a tiled floor. A single exposed light bulb hangs down, illuminating the workspace. In the background, there is a window with a translucent covering and some additional fabric or tools hanging on the walls. The overall atmosphere is that of an artisanal weaving workshop, likely used for making traditional textiles or carpets.
