Building Inclusive Communities at Lankapura Pradeshiya Sabha

A team led by #Manique Gunaratne did a #disability #accessibility #audit and an #advocacy group discussion with persons with #disabilities belonging to #Lankapura #Pradeshiya #Sabha in #Pollonnaruwa District and staff members (persons with non-disabilities) of the Pradeshiya Sabha on how to have an #inclusive approach when providing services which already exists at the Lankapura Pradeshiya Sabha in #Polonnaruwa district in #North #Central Province in January 2022.

#UNDP acknowledges the fact that disability is a crosscutting issue which needs multi-stakeholder intervention including local government authorities.

#Local #Governments play a vital role in the lives of people with disabilities because of their broad mandate.

Unlike most state government institutions, Local Governments are multi-functional, with extensive responsibilities and activities across property, community, and human service areas and, in addition, have the capacity to make policy level decisions at the local level.

All these functions and decisions directly or indirectly impact upon the quality of life of the people with disabilities who live, work, and socialize in their local communities.

Therefore, #CDLG through this initiative seeks to enhance the internal capacity of local authorities to adhere to disability accessibility regulations in Sri Lanka and raise the awareness on the importance of #disability #inclusive accessibility to local level services.

This initiative seeks to conduct accessibility audits in selected local government authority office premises amongst other activities.

We are confident that this initiative promoted by the UNDP will improve the #accessibility of people with disabilities to #local #governance.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) selected The Employers’ Federation of Ceylon as the implementing partner for the project.

Established in 1929, the Employers’ Federation of Ceylon (EFC) is the national employers’ organization in Sri Lanka.

Over the years, we have committed ourselves to adapt to the requirements of a dynamic membership to promote productive employment and social harmony.

The Employers network on Disability was formed by the EFC with the objective of facilitating employment and training opportunities for persons with disabilities in the private sector.

Group of eleven adults standing and posing outdoors. They are all wearing face masks and name badges, suggesting a professional or official gathering. One man in the front center is seated in a wheelchair. The group is diverse, with both men and women present, dressed in business or semi-formal attire, including shirts, blouses, sarees, and dresses. Behind them is a large signboard with text in a South Asian script, possibly Sinhala, and trees providing shade. The ground is paved with interlocking bricks, and the atmosphere appears to be friendly and collegial.

Group of people outdoors, with trees and greenery in the background. In the foreground, a woman in a white dress with blue and green floral patterns is holding a white cane with a red tip, commonly used by people who are blind or visually impaired. She is being guided by a younger woman in a blue patterned top and grey pants, who is holding the cane and showing her how to use it. Both women are wearing face masks and name tags on blue lanyards. Behind them, a man in a pink shirt and black pants, also wearing a mask and lanyard, is closely observing or assisting. In the background, another woman in a blue and white striped shirt is writing on a clipboard, and a bicycle is visible nearby. The setting appears to be a training or orientation session for mobility skills for people with visual impairments.

A group of six men, all wearing face masks, gathered outside a building. One man is seated in a blue wheelchair, while the others stand around him. The man in the wheelchair is holding a yellow measuring tape that extends across the ground to a doormat in front of a doorway. The scene appears to be an accessibility assessment or demonstration, possibly measuring the entrance width or ramp access for wheelchair users. The background includes trees, potted plants, and a paved courtyard. The men are dressed in casual or business-casual attire, and some are wearing ID badges.

A group of people sitting in a meeting room. There are about thirteen individuals, both men and women, seated in a semi-circle arrangement. Most of them are wearing face masks, suggesting a concern for health safety, possibly due to COVID-19. Some people are taking notes, one person is using a tablet, and others are listening attentively. The room has yellow curtains, a glass coffee table in the center, and a desk in the foreground. There are notice boards and framed certificates or plaques on the walls, and a Sri Lankan flag is visible in the background. The atmosphere appears formal and focused, likely a discussion or planning session.
