GAP ANALYSIS OF DISABILITY INCLUSIVENESS IN THE JUSTICE SECTOR
#Manique Gunaratne participated at the Validation Workshop on the Gap Analysis of #Disability #Inclusiveness in the #Justice Sector in Sri Lanka in September 2023 at the #Renuka #City Hotel.
The pursuit of justice is a fundamental pillar of any democratic society, aiming to ensure fairness, equality, and the protection of individual #rights. However, for persons with disabilities, accessing justice can often be an arduous journey fraught with numerous barriers and challenges. Sri Lanka, a country known for its rich history and cultural diversity, grapples with these issues as it strives to uphold the principles of justice and inclusivity.
Persons with disabilities, encompassing a wide range of #physical, #mental, and #psychosocial impairments, constitute a significant and diverse segment of Sri Lanka's population. According to the World Report on Disability published by the #World #Health #Organization (#WHO) and the #World #Bank, approximately 12.9% of Sri Lanka's population, or over 2.6 million individuals, are living with disabilities. These individuals, like all citizens, have the right to access justice on an equal basis with others, as enshrined in numerous international treaties and Sri Lanka's own constitution.
