The Kandalama Tank, also known as the Kandalama Reservoir, is a significant ancient man-made lake located near #Dambulla in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. It was originally constructed during the reign of #King #Vasabha (65–109 AD) and has since been a vital resource for the region.
The tank is part of the ancient irrigation systems that are a hallmark of Sri Lanka's hydraulic civilization. It is surrounded by lush forests and the striking landscape of the Dambulla region, with the nearby #Sigiriya #Rock Fortress adding to its scenic beauty. The tank not only supports agriculture by providing water for irrigation but also plays a crucial role in maintaining the area's biodiversity, supporting a variety of flora and fauna.
The Kandalama Tank is also associated with the renowned Heritance Kandalama hotel, a luxury eco-friendly resort designed by the famous Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. The hotel is built seamlessly into the natural environment, offering stunning views of the tank and its surroundings.
Overall, the Kandalama Tank is an important historical and ecological site, reflecting the ingenuity of ancient Sri Lankan water management practices while contributing to the region's natural beauty and tourism.
