Minneriya Lake

We all love to travel: to discover new destinations, make new friends, etc. However, for people with #disabilities, traveling is not only a pleasure but also has a therapeutic component.

Traveling has been proven to improve social skills, communication skills, and self-esteem. In addition, with ContigoMasViajes (an agency specializing in accessible travel for people with disabilities), travelers have the opportunity of participating in the entire planning and making-decision processes, therefore improving their self-management skills in daily life.

Ms. Manique Gunaratne gave the opportunity to a group of persons with diverse disability to visit the #Minneriya Lake in Polonnaruwa district in March 2022.

The Minneriya Wewa was built by the great reservoir builder, King Mahasen (276-303) who ruled in Anuradhapura. This reservoir occupied 4670 acres and it’s strong 13 meter tall dam running along a distance of 2km held over 20 billion gallons of water. The water arrived from Mahaweli River, 48 kms away, along the Elahara canal built by the King .

Lake scene with overhanging tree branches in the foreground. The calm water extends toward a small, forested island or landmass in the middle distance. Behind that, faint hills or mountains are visible under a mostly clear sky dotted with some fluffy clouds. The overall atmosphere is peaceful and serene, with lush greenery and gentle sunlight.

A group of seven people, four women and three men, standing side by side on the roadside. Behind them is a white vehicle partially visible, and they are on the edge of a tree-lined road bordered by green foliage. Most are casually dressed; one woman is wearing a medical mask. The sunlight filters through the trees, casting dappled shadows on the ground. The mood appears relaxed, and they are likely posing for a group photo during a trip or outing.

The photo shows a group of people walking down a set of concrete steps outdoors on a sunny day. In the foreground, two males are walking side-by-side. The boy on the left is wearing an orange T-shirt that says "NEW YORK CITY USA" and a face mask. The man on the right is wearing a yellow polo shirt and blue jeans. In the lower right, two dogs are lying down on the steps. The steps lead toward a large body of water (like a lake or reservoir) visible in the background, with lush green trees and vegetation surrounding it.
