Creating Parks for Everyone at Jaffna Children’s Park

A meaningful visit to Jaffna Park highlighted an important message—public spaces must be accessible to all, especially children with disabilities.

With the support of #Manique Gunaratne in May 2022, a group of persons with disabilities was given the opportunity to experience the beauty and joy of the park. This initiative was more than just a visit, was a reminder that inclusion matters in every space, including recreation and leisure.

Parks are places where children learn, play, and grow. Ensuring accessibility means creating an environment where every child, regardless of ability, can enjoy, explore, and feel a sense of belonging.

Let us work together to build a world where no child is left out of joy, nature, and community.

vAn outdoor walkway beside a concrete wheelchair ramp with black metal handrails. Several adults are present, most wearing face masks, and one woman on the ramp is using a white cane with a red tip. The ramp runs from the lower right toward the center, with a short set of steps next to it. A woman in a pink-and-purple patterned sari stands on the ramp, head slightly down, holding the cane toward the ground. To the left of the ramp is a paved path with small shrubs and a grassy strip. A woman in a black sari stands on this path near the ramp, facing toward the ramp area. In the background on the right, three adults stand near a low wall and a cable barrier with gold-colored connectors; two appear to have ID lanyards. Behind them are a road, trees, and many overhead power lines. On the left background is a small covered area with posters and a few parked motorcycles.

A woman in the foreground is walking down the ramp using a white cane with a red tip; she is wearing a pink-and-purple patterned dress, a light blue face mask, and an ID badge on a lanyard. Several other adults stand to the right near a low white wall and rope-style railing; some are wearing face masks and office-style clothing, including a man in a red shirt and beige pants and another in a light blue shirt and dark trousers. On the left side, there is a small building or kiosk with a curved canopy roof and posters displayed on a wall, with benches and plants nearby. The setting has trees, including palm trees, utility poles with overhead wires, and a paved sidewalk alongside a road.

A group of five adults standing outdoors beside a paved walkway and a small landscaped garden strip. In the center, a woman wearing a bright pink-and-purple sari and a light-colored face mask is holding a white cane with a red tip, angled down to the ground in front of her as if navigating the path. To her left stand two men wearing face masks and ID lanyards; one wears a blue-and-white plaid shirt and dark trousers, and the other wears a light shirt and light trousers. In the left foreground, a woman with long dark hair in a braid wears a dark blue patterned dress and a black face mask, standing near the edge of the grass. In the far left background, another man in a light blue shirt and dark trousers stands near a parked scooter. The walkway is made of interlocking red and gray pavers with a low concrete border. Along the right side are green shrubs and ornamental plants with yellow and reddish leaves. Behind them is a road and, across the road, a two-story building with a balcony and a sign that includes the word “ROOMS.” There are several trees, including palm trees, and overhead power lines.

A woman standing outdoors between large elephant statues, with a smaller elephant statue in front of her. The woman has medium-brown skin and dark hair pulled back, and she is wearing a bright pink and purple sari with a floral pattern and a purple lanyard around her neck. One large elephant statue is on the left side facing forward, another large elephant statue is on the right side with its head close to the camera, and the smaller elephant statue is centered in front with its trunk down. The setting appears to be a park with grass and dirt on the ground, leafy trees and palm trees in the background, and a low black metal fence behind the statues. A signboard is visible above, but the text is too small to transcribe clearly from this image.
