access for all at Anuradhapura Municipal Council

People with disabilities are more likely than the general population to suffer anxiety, discomfort, and animosity. To a significant measure, such attitudes arise from a lack of understanding of disability and what it's like to live in a world with individuals who do not share that experience. As a result, in Sri Lanka, collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Employers' Federation of Ceylon (EFC), Specialised Training & Disability Resource Centre took the initiative to implement a project on Disability Accessibility Audit and Capacity Building of Local Government Authorities in Sri Lanka. The audit team from EFC led by #Manique Gunaratne which included persons with diverse disabilities did an disability accessibility audit at Anuradhapura Municipal Council (MC), in Anuradhapura district,  in North Central Province in November 2021 to give recommendations on how to make the Anuradhapura Municipal Council access for all. 2 Advocacy Group discussions were held with persons with disabilities belonging to Anuradhapura MC and staff members (persons with non-disabilities) of the Municipal Council on how to have an inclusive approach when providing services which already exists.

A group of people standing and posing outdoors on a paved area bordered by greenery. There are thirteen individuals, most wearing face masks and some with gloves, suggesting they are taking safety precautions. One person is sitting in a wheelchair at the front center, and another person to their left is standing with a crutch. The rest of the group, both men and women, are dressed in a mix of formal and semi-formal attire. Trees and dense bushes form the background, creating a lush green atmosphere.

Classroom or seminar room with several people sitting spaced apart, all wearing face masks. There is a woman at the front table with a laptop, addressing the group. The room is bright with white walls and large windows. Some people have papers or bags with them, and there is a calendar on the wall showing the month of December. The seating arrangement and masks suggest adherence to social distancing guidelines, possibly due to COVID-19 precautions.

A group of people in a waiting area or clinic, all wearing face masks and some also wearing gloves. There are several men standing, one person sitting in a blue wheelchair, and others seated on chairs—one person has a crutch resting on their lap. A couple of people appear to be taking notes or talking to the others. The room is well-lit with large windows, white walls, and ceiling lights. The atmosphere suggests a health-related event or a meeting focused on accessibility or medical care.

One person is seated in a wheelchair, and some are dressed in formal or professional attire, such as sarees and shirts with ID lanyards. The group appears to be engaged in conversation or an organized activity, possibly related to health or a community event. The setting is outdoors, with a paved walkway, leafy branches above, and a white building with large windows in the background.
